WRITER. READER. TEACHER. TRAVELER. CHOCOLATE EATER.

I was born in New York and live there now. In Antigua, Guatemala, in 2005, I created Chocolate in Context, a project that coincided with wonderful momentum in the blogging world and the chocolate industry. I've been a writer of different things at different times, a resident of half a dozen countries and a visitor to many more, and a benevolent breaker of rules. My work has several times been listed among the notable entries in The Best American Travel Writing and The Best American Essays. I currently teach writing to freshman at New York University as well as adults who take my classes online. Here, I combine my original blog with two other personal projects. Cinco de Marzo, named for the day I started recording these recipes, is a chronicle of my life in food beyond chocolate. Translational Movement, a travelogue, is a record of places I have been and intend to go.
